Year-End Readiness: Preparing Materials and Navigating Difficult Conversations

This session is designed to support HR professionals as they prepare for an effective year-end process. The session will cover best practices for year-end planning, preparing clear materials for Board review, and developing effective internal communication documents. Attendees will gain practical insights into navigating difficult conversations related to decision-making, salary and performance assessments, and performance-based payouts, as well as supporting leadership in responding to tough questions from internal stakeholders and the Board. Participants will leave with practical skills to support smoother processes and more productive conversations.

Bio Details

Reanna Dorscher, Partner, Hugessen Consulting


Reanna is a highly accomplished advisor with over 15 years of experience collaborating with boards and executives to tackle intricate challenges. Her expertise lies in strategic compensation design, including for special situations such as initial public offerings, change in control scenarios, and senior executive succession planning. Reanna is instrumental in leading Hugessen's executive compensation and governance practice, where she leverages her extensive knowledge to drive results. Moreover, she spearheads the firm's initiatives on shareholder engagement and co-leads the Calgary office, playing a crucial role in the firm's overall success.

Bridget McKellar, Partner, Hugessen Consulting


Bridget is a trusted board advisor, with over 15 years of experience consulting to boards and executive teams in the areas of business and talent strategies, executive compensation, corporate and investment performance assessment, employment contracts, corporate governance, and board effectiveness. Her client mandates include a wide range of businesses across Canada, including large public and private companies, clients with major shareholder backing, companies undergoing transactions, and multi-national / cross-border clients.

Kathy McCrum, Vice President People & Organization, Trican


Ms. McCrum joined Trican in 2023 as the Vice President, Human Resources. In her current role, Ms. McCrum oversees all aspects of Human Resources, Training, Marketing and Communications, and Organizational Effectiveness at Trican. She is a business executive leader who has gained unique experience in multiple industries, including energy (power utility, oil and gas), heavy equipment, and transportation. Ms. McCrum started her career with Canadian Pacific Railway, where she held various management roles in HR, Customer Service Operations, and Business Development. After 11 years with CP Rail, she held senior HR and Safety leadership positions at Kramer Caterpillar (a Caterpillar heavy equipment dealer), and at the Coop Refinery Complex in Saskatchewan. Ms. McCrum joined SaskPower Corporation’s executive team in 2017 as the Vice President, Human Resources and Safety, where she was responsible for all people matters as well as the safety programs and strategies for the company. In 2021, Ms. McCrum relocated back to Calgary and joined WestJet in the position of Vice President of People and Employee Relations. Ms. McCrum holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Regina. She is a certified personal and professional coach (Concordia University) and in 2021 completed her ICD.D certification from the Institute of Corporate Directors at the Rotman School of Business. She currently serves on the Heritage Calgary Board of Directors where she holds the position of Chair of the Governance and HR Committee.
